Training Away Aggressiveness With Uri the German Shepherd

At A Peaceful Pack, we understand that every dog we work with is unique, with their own set of challenges and personalities. Some issues may be specific to a particular breed or brought on by trauma, while others may have been trained into a dog.

Training Away Aggressiveness With Uri the German Shepherd

Take Uri, the six-year-old Czechoslovakian German Shepherd. He was initially trained as a Class III protection dog in Colorado, with elite-level training to bite on command, avoid loud noises, and avoid distractions. While his previous training served a real purpose, his owner brought Uri to us to help reshape his behavior so he can safely live in a family setting.

The Before: Unchecked Aggressiveness

Even with his previous elite-level training, Uri still struggled with impulse control. At times, he would escape from the backyard and bite neighbors walking their dogs. At the first sign of the gate being left open, he would bolt and try to look for his perceived "threats". His reliance on that instinct and previous training had made him a skilled protection dog, but now it was turning him into a liability.

At one point, the owner was even sued and had to appear in court for a biting incident. This wasn't just your typical aggressiveness with constant barking and showing teeth; this was a safety issue. Uri’s constant confusion between "real threats" and everyday encounters caused him to be in a continual state of aggressiveness. And with kids, frequent guests, and a housemaid, the stakes were too high to get it wrong.

Our Training: Re-Teaching the Basics

Because of his unique situation, our team had to develop a customized behavioral training program specifically fitted to Uri’s triggers and temperament. We had to reteach the basics to re-establish behavioral patterns before addressing his aggression.

Using an E-collar and a prong collar, we could provide clear and consistent communication on which behaviors we want to encourage. By using CAT/BAT (Constructional Aggression Treatment / Behavior Adjustment Training) and proper greeting drills, we were able to train Uri not to perceive people and other dogs as constant threats. We would simulate real-world scenarios, from trainers walking other dogs nearby to housekeeper visits. Additionally, all of Uri’s meals were earned while training to fully reinforce these wanted behaviors.

The After: From Liability to Calm

Uri picked up his boarding and training regimen very well. Our team was able to take him into public places like Utica, and the owners were even able to take him off-leash walking confidently. With our training and support, we were able to help Uri choose calm behavior over protective instincts and understand precisely what is expected of him. Instead of having to be put down for aggressive behavior and biting, Uri was able to live another 6-8 years peacefully with his owner and family without biting anyone else. A Peaceful Pack didn’t just transform Uri’s life; our team helped bring back peace and calm to their owners, who were constantly trying to thwart the dangers of his aggressiveness.
